Choose Your Topic

Brainstorming IdeasWhen writing a blog post, the first thing you need to do is choose a topic.

If your website focuses on a particular industry or subject, try to find a topic related to that. And choose something you are genuinely interested in. It’s much easier to write about a subject you are knowledgeable and passionate about.

For example, this post is all about blog content writing, because we are experts in this area, and we love to write about it!

Keyword Research

Keyword ResearchBefore you start writing a blog post, it’s useful to get an idea of what people are searching for online, within your chosen topic. There are lots of keyword research tools out there. The most well-known being the Google Adwords Keyword Planner. This tool uses Google search data to suggest keywords related to your topic and gives you their average search volume per month. Please note, you need to sign up to Google Adwords to use this tool, and it only shows the most accurate data if you have an active ad campaign running with them. Another great keyword tool is aptly named Keyword Tool. This one uses Google’s auto-complete feature to suggest keywords and search questions. You do not need to sign up to use Keyword Tool and it is very user-friendly.

From your research, it’s important to identify a focus keyword or keyphrase, which you will target in your post. So, for this post, our focus keyphrase is “how to write a good blog post” because it represents what the page is about, and we know that people are searching for this term online.

Write Your Post

Time to get writing! Choose a short and snappy heading, which explains exactly what the blog post is about. Make sure you structure your content well. We recommend:

Firstly, an introductory paragraph explaining what the blog is about.

Then, your main content, which will explore your topic in detail.

Finally, a concluding paragraph, summing up the points you’ve made and including a call to action.

Keep sentences and paragraphs short and use sub-headings throughout. This splits up the content into clear sections and makes it easier to read. Within the content you can link to other relevant pages on your own site, as well as other useful web pages.  Aim for your post to be at least 300 words in length.

Ensure you have mentioned your focus keyword within your content, including headings and meta data. If you are using WordPress, Yoast SEO Plugin is an invaluable resource for helping you to target your focus keyword correctly.

Make It Visually Interesting

Your readers are unlikely to read every word on the page, especially if it is just a full page of text.

There needs to be visual stimuli to keep them interested.

Check It, Publish It, Share It

Sometimes it’s useful to ask a friend or colleague to check it over too, as they may spot something you’ve missed. When you’re happy, publish your blog post. Share it on your social media channels to ensure as many people see it as possible. Having a strong social media following is key for many of today’s biggest bloggers.
